    In January , McSally announced that she was entering the race to succeed retiring Republican U.S. Senator Jeff Flake.[1] She won the Republican nomination in August but lost to Democrat Kyrsten Sinema in the general election.

    After the Senate election, U.S. Senator Jon Kyl announced his resignation from the state's other seat. Governor Doug Ducey then announced that McSally would Kyl.[2] This made McSally the second woman to be chosen to serve as a U.S. Senator from Arizona, and made Arizona one of the few states with two women serving as its senators.[3]
