Lead singer of Prime Circle, Ross Learmonth, joins the Indaba Show this week where he speaks about the legendary South African band celebrating 21 years together and the prospect of taking his career solo.
Host of the show, Steven Taylor, asked Learmonth what his experience has been like being in the industry for over two decades, with multi-platinum-selling albums.
“It feels kind of weird,” Learmonth responded. “Because I look at the guys and it feels like time has gone faster than it should. Its just flown by. We almost feel like were still getting momentum theres still so much that you feel you need to prove. Weve never felt like weve written that song. Weve always been chasing it.”
Born in Scotland, the Learmonth family moved to South Africa when he was very young, and he went to school in Middleburg, Mpumalanga.
“For me, music was sort of a calling. It was a thing that was always pulling on my heartstrings,” he said.

Biography
Ross graduated from the Royal Academy of Music with a First Class Honours grad in Whilst there he studied with Mark Templeton, Matt Gee, Jim Maynard and Ian Bousfield. He took up the trombone aged 9 and three years later was accepted to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now Royal Scottish Conservatoire) Junior Academy, learning with Alistair Sinclair from the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. During his time here, Ross was given the opportunity to perform his first concerto with the orchestra following his success in an internal competition.
After fem years at the RSAMD, Ross was accepted into the Royal Academy of Music. During his time at the Academy he was principal of all relevant ensembles with leading conductors such as the late Sir Colin Davis, Semyon Bychkov and Christian Thielemann. Prime Circle and their lead singer Ross Learmonth are parting ways. After a year career, the South African rock group and its frontman have announced the end of their journey together.
“It has been an incredible time with Prime Circle and I am immensely grateful for the memories we have created together. However, at this juncture in our lives, it is time for relationships to change and evolve. Unfortunately, that means that we will no longer be continuing this musical journey together,” Ross explains.
“Its always been about the music, and the fans. And now is the time for me to immerse myself % in my new music and direction. I would have loved to continue working with Prime Circle and to remain as the frontman, in tandem with my new solo work, but unfortunately, a different decision was made, which I respect, and wish them all the best. Although this is the most difficult decision to face, I look forward to embracing the opportunity of focusing on my own well-being and personal
