    American illustrator and writer (–)

    Arnold Stark Lobel (May 22, – December 4, ) was an American author of children's books, including the Frog and Toad series and Mouse Soup. He wrote and illustrated these picture books as well as Fables, a Caldecott Medal winner for best-illustrated U.S. picture book. Lobel also illustrated books by other writers, including Sam the Minuteman by Nathaniel Benchley.

    Lobel was born in Los Angeles, California, to Lucille Stark and Joseph Lobel, and raised in Schenectady, New York, the hometown of his parents, by his German-Jewish grandparents.[1] Lobel was frequently bullied in his childhood[2] and often read picture books at his local library.[3] He attended the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. In , after he graduated, he married Anita Kempler, also a children's writer and illustrator whom he'd met while in art school. The two worked in the same studio[4] and collabora

    He was a born storyteller—he began making up stories extemporaneously to entertain his fellow second-graders in Schenectady, New York, where he grew up in the care of his grandparents. Mr. Lobel called himself a &#;lucky amateur&#; in terms of his writing. Viewing himself as a professionally trained illustrator (he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute), he said, &#;I know how to draw pictures. With writing, I don&#;t really know what I&#;m doing. It&#;s very intuitive.&#;

    In addition to the Frog and Toad books, Owl at Home, Mouse Tales, The Book of Pigericks, and many other popular books he created, Mr. Lobel also illustrated other writers&#; texts that captured his fancy.     Arnold Lobel (–) was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Schenectady, New York. He was ill and homebound during most of second grade, and one of the ways he kept busy was bygd drawing animals. When he finally returned to school, he used his drawings as a way to make friends with his classmates. His art has been making friends for him ever since.

    Arnold graduated from Pratt Institute, where he focused on bild. At first he created pictures for other people’s stories and poems. Then in , he published his first author/illustrator planerat arbete , A Zoo for Mister Muster (HarperCollins). Nearly one hundred books for children followed—along with many awards and honors. In , he received a Caldecott Honor for Hildilid’s Night by Cheli Duran Ryan (Macmillan), which he illustrated, and in , he won the Caldecott Medal for Fables (HarperCollins), which he wrote as well as illustrated.
