French supermarket CEO questioned over finances
Jean-Charles Naouri, the boss of supermarket group Casino, is being questioned over stock price manipulation, insider trading and corruption, a source told AFP.
Jean-Charles Naouri, chairman and chief executive of heavily indebted French supermarket group Casino, was being questioned by police on Thursday, June 1, in a preliminary investigation over stock price manipulation, insider trading and corruption, a source with direct knowledge of the case told Agence France-Presse.
Shares in Casino closed down 9.43% in Paris.
Naouri, already under pressure to reduce debt at retailer Casino, was being held in Paris by judges probing links between Naouri and a populist financial journalist who has made several attempts at the French presidency.
The source told AFP the alleged acts date to 2018 and 2019, with judges investigating since 2020. Lawyers for Naouri did not respond to requests for comment.

Early life
[edit]Jean-Yves Naouri was born on 19 November 1959 in Bône, French Algeria (now Algeria).[1][2] His brother, Jean-Charles Naouri, is the majority shareholder, chairman and CEO of Groupe Casino. Their family was Jewish; their father was a paediatrician.[2] They emigrated to mainland France as children.[2]
Naouri graduated from the École Polytechnique in 1979,[2] followed by the École des Mines.[3]
Career
[edit]Naouri started his career as a Corps des mines,[4] where he worked in the oil industry.[2] He was appointed as an advisor to Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the Minister of Industry and Foreign Trade, in 1991.[2]
