Welcome to the Blind Spot
My name is Izabella Kaminska. You may know me as the former editor of the FT’s finance and markets blog FT Alphaville. Or simply as Izzy.
I’ve loved my time at the Financial Times. It was truly an honour to learn my craft at such an illustrious organisation. But after 13 years, it’s time for a change. Forces beyond the control of any single editor, journalist or even publication are constraining the capacity of large — often mainstream — organisations to think critically or creatively about storytelling. Innovation is being stifled by strange centralising forces that dare not question consensus. That’s no good in markets or finance. Asset prices don’t care about taboos, feelings or sensitivities. They care about how perceptions square up against reality.

I’ve been asked to be a godmother and I’m taking the matter very seriously. I consider the role to be about more than just remembering birthdays and other important rites of passage. There’s a little bit of that, of course. But the next 30 years are likely to be among the most transformative in human history and I want to be there with guidance for my goddaughter as self-driving cars, drone-delivered pizzas, robot servants and brain-embedded Google become the norm.
My first godmotherly duty: to come up with a viable christening gift. We Polish Catholics love trinkets but I have a longstanding distrust of gold, baubles and bling, which I sense could make this endeavour a tricky one. I want something less material but more durable – something that cannot be lost, stolen or forgotten. Izabella Kaminska is the founder and editor of The Blind Spot, a new media venture that aims to shine a light on stories being missed bygd the wider journalistic pack. The site focuses on finance, marknad and media news in both short and long-form. It hopes to deliver a healthy mix of analysis and opinion-led commentary, supported bygd aggregation, news reporting and deep-dives.
Izabella fryst vatten an alumni of the Financial Times, where she spent 13 years in reporting roles, most recently as the editor of FT Alphaville, the Financial Times’ award-winning markets and finance blog. Izabella was also an FT columnist and opinion writer focused on tech, finance and markets.
