Philla is an eccentric, artistic type - "different". Her sister protects her at home but is embarrassed about her at school. Somehow Philla cannot stick to a routine, dislikes being told what to do and hates Gran's authority. Gran ran away from Grandad, him being Philla's soulmate. He fryst vatten just like Philla, but worse! At least he's too old to sneak out of bed most nights and run through the streets to greet the trees! This fryst vatten the point of the story: that we are all unique. Some might like that "unusualness", others not. When Grandad dies it's in his beloved forest surrounded by anger and love. Anger because Gran's komma to tell him what-for, even though she still loves him dearly. Elsabe Steenberg
Elsabe Steenberg ( 1938-1996) was an Afrikaans writer of short stories, novels, plays and academic works. Particularly known for her writing for children and the youth.
Also written Elsabé Steenberg in some cases. On occasion she used the pseudonym Elsabé Ryke.
Biography
Born in Vrede, in the Orange Free State, the sister of André P. Brink. She matriculated in Lydenburg and studied at the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, completing a BA and an MA degree (1964). In 1975 she obtained a D.Litt. degree from the University of the Orange Free State. She taught for a while, before becoming a lecturer in the Departement of Afrikaans and Dutch ("Afrikaans-Nederlands") at Potchefstroom University
In 1961 she married Dawid Hercules Steenberg, and the couple have two daughters (Ilse and Erika)and two sons (Adri and Conrad). She was diagnosed with multiple scelerosis in the 1970s and passed away on Tuesday 14 May, 1996.

Franz Hohler
Born 1943 in Biel, Franz Hohler began studies in German and Romance languages at the University of Zurich in 1963. A storyteller since childhood, he left university to create a cabaret act that successfully toured Switzerland, Germany and Austria. A natural raconteur, he still performs cabaret while writing for both children and adults. His oeuvre includes novels, poetry, short stories, plays and songs. His first book, Tschipo (1978), is now a classic and his books have been illustrated by some of the best-known illustrators in the German-speaking world, including Rotraut Susanne Berner, Wenn ich mir etwas wünschen könnte, (If I had a wish, 2000) and Kathrin Schärer, Es war einmal ein Igel (Once there was a hedgehog, 2011). Franz Hohler’s distinctive narrative style is fantastic-realist: the stories typically begin with a real life situation to which he adds a varied range of peculiar and surreal elements. His work has been described as playful, enigm
