Ted Cruz is a U.S. senator running for the Republican nomination for president.
He was born Dec. 22, 1970, named Rafael Cruz in Canada. His Cuban father and Irish American mother had moved there during the 1960s oil boom, The Washington Post reported.

Cruz served as an adviser on the 2000 presidential campaign of George W. Bush and became solicitor general of Texas in 2003. He won election to the U.S. Senate in 2012 with the support of the Tea Party and went on to orchestrate a governmental shutdown in opposition to Obamacare. After losing his bid for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination to Donald Trump, Cruz was re-elected to the Senate in 2018.
