I was 11 years old the first time I even heard mention of a violin, My older brother Siqui wrote home that he had decided to play the violin as a hobby while studying at the university in Paris. (My father was a scholar and believed the French schools were far superior to the Chinese.)
Unfortunately, Siqui was in a severe bicycle accident and had to return home to heal. As he played to pass the time, I became mesmerized by the beautiful music this complicated instrument could make with small changes to the strings and bow.
When Siqui was healthy enough to return to Paris, I convinced my family to let me go with him to study the violin with European masters. My mother was very reluctant to let her year-old son, who spoke only Chinese to leave home to pursue a youthful fantasy about mastering an unfamiliar musical instrument. Chinese violinist and composer
In this Chinese name, the family name is Ma.
Ma Sicong (simplified Chinese: 马思聪; traditional Chinese: 馬思聰; pinyin: Mǎ Sīcōng; Wade–Giles: Ma Szu-ts'ung; May 7, – May 20, ) was a Chineseviolinist and composer. He was referred to in China as "The King of Violinists."[1] His Nostalgia (思鄉曲) for violin, composed in as part of the Inner Mongolia Suite (內蒙組曲), is considered one of the most favorite pieces of 20th century China.
In early , Ma returned to China, and got married in the same year to Wang Muli (王慕理). In the following period, he composed many renowned pieces such as Lullaby, Inner Mongolia suite, Tibet tone poem (西藏音詩), and Madrigal (牧歌).
