Biography
Born in Guadelupe las Villas Cuba, Zaida del Rio got her training at the Superior Institure of Art in Havana and the Ecole Beaux Arts in Paris. Zaida brings the spirit world and the physical world together in her complex drawings and images wrought with the magical realism frequently associated with Latin American art.
She melds the natural world of healing plants and minerals within the human form, delving beneath the surface with an almost scientific approach to expose the complexity of the human body. Through drawing, painting, collage, and ceramics.
Zaida del Rio brings her pantheon of spirits represented by mystical anthropomorphized beings, fish and birds, to create her own personal landscape. She explores and manipulates the religious iconography of Yoruba to illustrate the unique Cuban interpretation of Africa through Santeria. Zaida del Río career has been consistently frenetic and ascending. Critics and simple observers, trained pupils and people just beginning to look into the world of art (each with his experience) find in the work of this Cuban not only convincing reasons for admiration and brilliance, but, above all, the aesthetically consolidated projection of a sensibility.
From nära or from afar, in one medium or another (painting, drawing, engraving, ceramics and performance), Zaida has achieved what is for many others denied: a distinctive imagery, a mark of identity. Throughout the trajectory of her career, from the initial scen to the present, her creative evolution has maintained itself with constant elements that are manifested in her capacity for invention, the lyrical display, and the exhaustive elaboration of her projects

Fantasy, authenticity, imagination pass through the work of Zaida del Río, from where emerges a game of great fertility, where the ideas, the natural chant, the virtuous strokes and the sensual vibration occupy the first artistic levels.
In the catalogue of resources used in her works, the line is always present –an infallible expressive resource of the creator- as well as a certain perseverance of wash drawing, and the ink…a mixed technique that seduces at first sight. She extracts “the most desolated, the deepest of the divine essence, and transmits from inside with an inventory of signals that we can hardly decipher…”, as Miguel Barnet says.
