Robert Ward Johnson (–)
Robert Ward Johnson was an Arkansas political leader who represented the state in both chambers of the U.S. Congress and as a congressman and senator in the Confederate Congress.
Born on July 22, , in Scott County, Kentucky, to Benjamin and Matilda Williams Johnson, he belonged to a powerful political family, as two of his uncles represented Kentucky in the U.S. House of Representatives, and another uncle, Richard Mentor Johnson, eventually became vice president of the United States. His father was appointed Superior Judge for Arkansas Territory (predecessor of the Supreme Court of Arkansas) in , and President Andrew Jackson later appointed him in as the first Federal District Judge for the new state of Arkansas. One of his daughters married Ambrose H. Sevier, head of the state Democratic Party and one of the first U.S. senators from Arkansas.

[modifier | modifier le code]Passionné dès le plus jeune age (8 ans) par l'aviation militaire, il obtient sa licence civile puis s'envole dans l'U.S.A.A.F.. Il est sous-lieutenant en juin et vole en entrainement sur chasseur P[1].
Il embarque pour la Grande-Bretagne en janvier au sein de la 8th AF. En mai, il est breveté pilote de chasse. Le 13 juin , il obtient sa première victoire avec son P contre un chasseur allemand Fw Le 26 juin, lors d'un combat aérien au-dessus de la France, il est blessé et brûlé mais parvient à retourner en Angleterre avec un appareil très endommagé. Il finit de détruire son avion en atterrissant. Il est décoré de la Purple Hart pour son courage. Le 10 octobre, au-dessus de l'Allemagne, il devient un as en abattant un cinquième appareil.
